Forty Days in the Desert

Ryan Thompson · January 1999

This was the poem my brother Justin liked most of all my poetry. My father asked that it be printed on Justin’s funeral program when he was buried in January 2002.

Walking through the desert Be it forty days, or forty years… I hear gentle whispers from the Spirit Guiding my emotions to tears As it turns out Consequences manifest my deepest fears It does me no good to scream and shout The rally cry that I once knew Sounds to others as only a mere pout So I shout until my face is blue The whole time knowing that Soon my days would be through My only plea then, was for just one friend One who understands Who knows my needs And feels my pains A friend that no matter what Will stroll along by my side No matter where I go With the twinkle of an eye And a sound of a horn My tired and weary soul, is no longer torn All that time in what seemed like forty years I realized with one last breath How much He really cares

As I Cried

Ryan Richard Thompson · 2001

Deep blue skies Circle around the hills so red On the horizon, minuet Mountains so perfectly shaped Fields of whey, soft and cozy As I watch the hour glass Free me with every passing grain of sand An hour, love is patience!!!!!! As the sands of the sea Envelope my emotions.. Surrounding me.. Slowly Quiet, the sea makes my way known As she makes me feel the vanity of her passions Inside I feel that she is all that I need to be satisfied But then I remember my Lord, Who was so horribly crucified

Rise or Fall

Ryan Richard Thompson · 2001 · In memory of 9/11

Tragedy is all around me. In so many ways I hurt inside. I see the damage... Yet I refuse to believe the lies. Our God is in control. That is something that the adversary can not disguise. I pray for those in pain. For our enemies, I vow not to meet them below. Nor will I hate them, that would be a shame. As the same I pray for mercy for all. No matter who or what may fall. Our God always lives. I pray that I remain to be, always His.

Seed of Prosperity

Ryan Richard Thompson · 2002 · To my brother Justin Jerad Thompson, 1-13-86 to 1-22-02

Be it 40 days or 40 years I hear gentle whispers from the Spirit Guiding my emotions to tears. As it turns out Consequences manifest my deepest fears It does me no good to scream and shout My thoughts acknowledged, but unknown The beaten path that I have traveled found me no rest I feel deep inside that my heart is torn Opening up my deepest most secure chest Would only bring up more decayed bones My past is forgotten none-the-less The shrubs have covered my paths The foliage in its place is beautiful, It is grace The Lord's servants planted a seed The Lord Himself provided nourishment (I gladly accept) And day by day it consumes me!

Giving Soul Fires

Ryan Richard Thompson · 2003

You've made me laugh You've made me cry And kept me warm, by making me dry You my friend have a heart of gold A heart that I once had but then sold I thought that I was being quite bold, being so bitter and cold But slowly I realized; I sold my only soul Love is what I truly sought Even with these words that I speak My life still feels dim and meek So now I will give and give Until my once small heart is soon big And then may I have a true reason to live

Questions for Shame

Ryan Richard Thompson · 2003

How can we be so brave Why all of the courage Only when we misbehave How come all of this passion Only when we sin Why can't we be more bold Why can't we have more compassion When we do what we are told Our defiance burns a hole in our heart Our selfishness burns a hole in our pocket Our arrogance spoils our spirit Why out of all things; Can we not understand

Poetry set to music

Poetry and lyrics have always been close to my heart. Today I use modern tools, including AI, to bring my poems to life by setting them to music. Every song is written from my own lyrics, and many of them are sung in my own voice.
